6 Must-Haves For Your Fall Wardrobe
Don’t let the new fall fashions put a major dent in your budget this season. New York Fashion Week showcased a few fashion holdovers from last year, including denim and metallic, so you don’t need a whole new wardrobe to keep with this year’s looks. Combine your old staples with a few key pieces and your wardrobe with a fresh style and a pop of colour to keep your look current for 2016.
A Great Shearling Bomber
Back in the day, a shearling jacket was hip-length, tan suede and bulky as all heck. But NYFW brought shearling back, in an array of colours and styles to suit anyone’s closet. Altuzarra and Kate Spade both showcased the updated aviator look, with everything from mini skirts to sneakers. Go for classic black or brown leather, or try block colours for a look that really stands out.
Pumpkin Spice Everything
Pumpkin Spice isn’t just for coffee anymore. Fashion runways were teeming with dresses, shirts and suits in the muted orange that has become synonymous with autumn. Proenza Schouler and Banana Republic used the colour liberally in their collections, and with a shade for every skin tone, it’s sure to be an instant classic.
Mini Skirt Suits
Ally McBeal did it in the 90s, and pretty much every designer brought it back for Fall 2016. Rebecca Minkoff, Michael Kors, Jason Wu and more had models strutting down the catwalk dressed for success in jackets with matching mini skirts. The tops and shoes were kept conservative, letting the legs do all the talking in this look.
Fall Floral
Floral prints usually call spring and summer to mind, but designers like Diane von Furstenberg and Zimmermann have updated this boho look for fall. Dresses are dark instead of light, long instead of short and sleeved instead of strapped. Perfectly paired with booties and a jacket, these florals take your wardrobe from summer festivals to autumn coffee dates. Add a big belt and some chunky jewelry to make the look more or less boho, and all about you.
Tartan On Top
For years, designers kept plaid on the bottom in skirts, shorts and pants. We had plaid scarves and plaid belts, and sometimes even plaid shoes. But this year, designers like Victoria Beckham, Calvin Klein and Rachel Zoe moved everyone’s favourite schoolgirl print front and center with tartan overcoats walking up and down the runways. The tartan was kept clean and simple, but those vertical and horizontal lines were the unmistakable plaid we love. Dress it up over a cocktail dress or use it to punch up jeans and a sweater. However you style it, tartan is back.
Chokers
Once the Kardashian girls started wearing them a few months ago, there was almost no doubt chokers would be the jewelry bandwagon to jump on this season. Whether it’s a skinny scarf, black velvet or diamond encrusted, chokers are everywhere. Models walked the runway this year for Oscar de la Renta and Adam Selman wearing chokers made of velvet and encrusted with jewels. Whether you go for lace, sparkle or bold black velvet, your choker will always make a statement.
