Dishoom Review
Leave your brains at home, that is the advice that everyone will give you before you watch any Bollywood masala entertainer, and Dishoom directed by Rohit Dhawan is no exception. As there isn’t much of a plot or anything that’s really suspenseful or thrilling about the film.
However, to give credit where it’s due Dhawan packs the film with cheesy humour, hilarious cameos, an upbeat soundtrack, and crispy edited action sequences, that zooms by so quickly that you don’t have time to relax for even a second.
When India’s tops batsman Viraj (Saqib Saleem) goes missing in Abu Dhabi, Kabir (John Abraham) an Indian special task force officer teams up with rookie police officer Junaid (Varun Dhawan) to track down and rescue Viraj before the India and Pakistan match which is just two days away. There’s also Jacqueline Fernandez who plays a small thief who crosses paths with our heroes. She ends up sticking by their side because she has information that can help them in the chase.
However, what co-writer and director Rohit does is he takes a page out of his dad, David Dhawan’s playbook by throwing everything at the screen as the film moves at a fast and furious pace. The audience doesn’t have the time to react to anything.
What does work in Dishoom is the films comedic sequences mostly coming from a cameo appearance from Akshay Kumar. He steals the show by playing an obvious gay party boy who orders our main protagonists to strip down to their underwear in exchange for his help with the case.
Like most buddy cop films such as the Rush Hour films and Central Intelligence the biggest strength in
Dishoom is the ‘bromance’ between John and Varun who hold this film together. John being the no-nonsense tough guy who always has sports a scowl on his face. Then there’s Varun who is the innocent, childish cop, and has the film’s best one-liners, can dance, and perform action scenes with ease. Akshaye Khanna also appears in the film and does a fine job as villainous bookie named Wagah.
I’m going with three out of five for Dishoom. If want to have a good time, then Dishoom is the way to go.
