Get Fit For 2016
The holidays are over, the new year is in full swing, and that can only mean one thing: it’s time to get in shape! Say goodbye to your fat pants and hello to your runners, because it’s time to conquer your fitness goals once and for all.
Sure you’ve said this before, but this time is different, I promise! You’re not going to lose motivation this time around because I’ve got some suggestions to help you stay on top of your fitness goals!
- Set realistic Goals
If you’re trying to avoid “falling off the wagon” this time around, it’s important that you set realistic goals. Yes, you may want to lose 20 pounds in a month or be able to run a full marathon by March, but unfortunately, for most of us that just isn’t going to happen. So don’t bite off more than you can chew. Instead, be realistic and set attainable short term and long-term goals.
- Plan Ahead
Once you’ve set your sights on some exciting goals, the next step is to plan things out. How exactly do you intend to succeed? What will your meals for the week look like? Which days will you be going to the gym? It’s important to ask yourself these questions so that you have an action plan to follow.
- Track Your Progress
Once you’ve got your goals and action plan in place, the next thing you’ll want to do is track your progress. Any wellness journey is going to be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. Some days you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world, and some days you’ll feel like your progress has completely stalled. Having a journal or log will help keep things a little more black and white.
- Find an Accountability Partner
Having someone on your team can be one of the most enjoyable parts of a wellness journey! Whether this person is your spouse, a colleague, or a friend, I find that having someone to share the journey with keeps me on track.
- Reward Yourself
Okay I lied, this is definitely the most fun part of any wellness journey, so as you track your progress and reach your targets, be sure to celebrate your accomplishments! Buy some fun fitness gear, or simply give yourself a “pat on the back” by indulging in something sweet.
Now some of you may have just read these tips and thought to yourself, “that’s nice, but I don’t have time for this kind of thing”? Well, fear not! Baby steps are all it takes to get you out the gate.
Do you work a desk job? If so, consider starting to get more active by getting up to take a brisk stroll at lunch.
Do you commute to work? Perhaps this is the year you might consider walking or riding your bike.
You’ll be amazed at how quickly you find ways to be active when you can see how many steps you’re taking each day. Every little bit counts and it’s really easy to find ways to get your body moving more!
