Meghan Markle Plans to Raise Her Child as a Feminist
At an International Women’s Day panel, the Duchess proclaimed her high hopes for her daughter to be a feminist.
While any #RoyalBaby news is exciting news, this tidbit straight from Meghan Markle herself on how she plans to raise her child has made headlines.
The Duchess of Sussex celebrated International Women’s Day by participating in a powerful panel discussion at King’s College in London. Organized by the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, the panel was planned to cover a wide range of issues affecting modern women. Markle shared the stage with Annie Lennox, former Australian prime minister Julia Gillard, and model Adwoa Aboah. When the conversation shifted to the Duchess’s pregnancy, she got personal with her audience, and revealed which particular quality she hopes is instilled in her future son or daughter.
“It’s funny, I’d actually been joking these past few weeks; I’d seen this documentary on Netflix about feminism and one of the things they said during pregnancy was, ‘I feel the embryonic kicking of feminism,’” Markle said. “I loved that. So boy or girl, whatever it is, we hope that that’s the case.”
Markle has truly embraced her stance as a Royal, arguably setting the most progressive example yet. She was the first Royal that publicly recognized themselves as a “feminist” when the word was included in her official bio on the Royal Family’s website, shortly after her engagement to Prince Harry.
Since the debut of her relationship and lifestyle transition, Markle has continuously experiencedracism and bigotry, yet she does not let any comment, any story, or any person stop her from using her platform in one of the most unique, and advantageous ways. She is a force to be reckoned with based on her involvement with the tiniest of communities in London, to her many contributions within an ongoing worldwide movement. Markle has also continued to remain very open about her past financial struggles, sharing that she relied on financial aid, scholarships and work-study programs to help her pay for her tuition, and lending a hand in the fight to alleviate these kinds of challenges for future generations.
Continuing on the topic of feminism during her International Women’s Day panel, Markle elaborated, “I think it would be impossible to not have boys especially as part of this conversation because picture how much courage it takes for a young girl in a small village, where most of the girls haven’t gone to school, and they’re reaching out, doing whatever they can, walking miles to be able to get an education. There’s nothing threatening about a woman coming up to the same level, it’s our safety in numbers. Men are part of the conversation… my husband certainly is!”
The Royal baby is due to make its grand entrance late April or early May, and we cannot wait to see how the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will raise their lil’ powerhouse child!
