No Resolutions Just Make a Change

Year after year we decide to make New Year’s resolutions starting January 1st and year after year they are somehow forgotten by the end of the month. This trendy way to somehow better ourselves seems to have the opposite effect. By the end of the month we feel defeated and miserable because we could not hold on to the one goal that was dear to us. So this year no set-backs just follow your heart and make the changes that will make you happy. Here are some rules to follow:

Rule #1: Don’t wait for a certain date or a certain event to be over. There is no right time. We always think that after this we will have more time, but that’s not how life works. Something always comes up and we lose focus on our goal. So from now on start right away, that very second, and just work through the event you are going through.

Rule #2: Set simple goals. Sometimes we set very ambitious goals and get too excited, only to learn that it is way too hard to stick to it. Although it’s great to have big goals, it’s always best to break it down into smaller goals and keep building on it. Be realistic and start with baby steps.

Rule #3: Find the support you need. Don’t just tell people that you have a goal, see if they want in on it. Knowing people with similar goals can be more motivating than just doing it all on your own. Let them know what you need from them, and in return you can do the same for them.

Rule #4: Don’t over think it. Sometimes we sit there thinking about our goal and keep talking about to whoever will listen.  Although, it is a great idea to have an action plan you can over think it. We tend to waste our energy talking and thinking about things when in reality we just need to get up and get going. That energy can be used to get 1% closer to our goal.

Rule #5: Track it/measure it. It is great to look back on our progress and visually see it. Depending on your goal, it can be as simple as placing a checkmark on a calendar or track it on your phone calendar; we all have our phones with us all the time.

Rule #6: Don’t give up on yourself. If you’ve had a bad day, don’t think it’s the end of your goal. It was one time and one day, think positive. It’s better to get right back into it instead of waiting for days, weeks or months. There is no need to be so hard on yourself.

As we all know that time flies, before we know it the week is over, the month and where did the year go? So, just think next year by this time you could have achieved your goal or made many positive steps towards it. Don’t waste any more time and make a change today.
