This American Tourist Helped Pull a Barcelona Teen to Safety During Terror Attack

With all of the heartbreaking news coming out of Barcelona following a deadly Aug. 17 terror attack, including 13 fatalities and over 100 people injured, people are treating one American tourist’s story as a bright spot in the darkness. Fifty-four-year-old California mom Shari Weise told Good Morning America that she was visiting her brother in Barcelona and happened to be sightseeing in Las Ramblas when a van began speeding through the historic district and striking passerby.

When she realized that something was wrong, Weise looked for a safe place to hide — and saw a teenaged boy standing, frozen and unsure, “like a deer in the headlights.” As she jumped out of the van’s path, Weise grabbed the teen and pulled him to safety behind a pole with her. “We crouched down together on the ground,” she recalled during the morning show, where she was applauded for potentially saving the boy’s life.

Because of Weise’s quick action in the face of impending danger, the teenage boy avoided injury (or worse). “All I thought about was, ‘I don’t want to get killed, I have kids, I have to get out of the way,'” the California woman told GMA, also mentioning that she cut her trip to Spain short and returned home following the deadly terror attack.
