Travelling With A Baby – Part 2
In last week’s column, I shared with you some tips on how to make the daunting task of flying with a baby just a little bit easier. But flying with your little one is just half the battle of taking her on vacation – what do you do once you arrive?
- Get the right room
A standard hotel room with two queen-sized beds means that your evening will get very quiet when your baby goes to bed. For our family, a separate bedroom for our daughter is a must. We put our daughter to sleep in the bedroom, and enjoy the rest of evening without worrying about waking her.
- Unpack strategically
Unpack before doing anything else. Set up a diaper-changing station, a play area and organize any food/kitchen items so that you know exactly where everything is when you need it.
- Nap on the go
Try taking your baby for a walk during naptime. If she will nap in the stroller, you can be out and about while she sleeps. If your baby sleeps best in a crib, then let her do just that. Use that time to nap yourself, or enjoy a book or a quiet movie.
- Keep the bedtime ritual
Keep up bedtime rituals of stories and lullabies when you’re on the road. Keeping up your kid’s routine will make it easier for them to sleep anywhere.
- Be flexible with food
To satiate your early rise, keep some food in the room (think Cheerios, bread, and cheese), to keep them going before you all head out for breakfast.
If you are travelling with formula, remember to pack a little more than you think you’ll need. If you’re using powdered formula, put it in Ziploc bags for lighter and easier packing.
It’s a big world out there, and seeing it through your baby’s eyes makes it all new again for you. Using these tips you can turn your little one into a seasoned traveller early on, and you can explore the world together.
