Women Who Are Quietly Changing The World

When we think of women in the world today, our first thoughts drift towards the celebrities we see on magazine covers. But there are are millions of women out there changing the world in their own unique ways, and though they may not be on magazine covers, the work they do is invaluable.

Gargee Ghosh

gargee_goshAs the Director for Development Policy and Finance at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gargee’s work includes developing new and innovative ways to get vaccines to those in developing nations who desperately need them. Gargee also works hard on the development of the Advance Market Commitment concept – an initiative that would make it worthwhile for companies to successfully develop vaccines, and encourage them to create vaccines for otherwise neglected diseases.

Before her current role at the Gates Foundation, Gargee worked in senior positions at Google.org and McKinsey & Company. She also spent four years previously working for the Gates Foundation in the Global Health Division. Hard work, innovative thinking and capitalizing on new opportunities have helped Gargee climb up the corporate ladder, while being a leader to those who follow her.

With Masters degrees in economics and international relations from Oxford and Georgetown, Gargee works tirelessly to make healthcare more available and affordable to those who need it most. And her hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2013, President Obama appointed Gargee to his Global Development Council, a White House think-tank that informs and provides advice to the President on issues including global development policies, public-private partnerships and supporting development initiatives around the world.

Glennon Doyle Melton

glennon-doyle-meltonGlennon started her mommy blog, simply titled “Momastery”, back in 2009 with the idea of sharing with the people closest to her, her own thoughts on marriage, parenting, love and life. But within a short couple of years, her witty, relatable posts started attracting a larger and larger audience. A few viral posts were even picked up by larger publications. Next came the book deals, speaking tours as well as the chance to work alongside people like Oprah Winfrey and giving TED Talks on matters close to her heart.

Recently, the crisis in Syria and the plight of Syrian refugees caught Glennon’s attention. She joined forces with fellow writers Brene Brown, Cheryl Strayed, Elizabeth Gilbert and Rob Bell to form The Compassion Collective. In less than six months, the Compassion Collective has raised $1.5 million to help refugees in Europe. A board of dedicated volunteers runs the Compassion Collective, and every penny raised goes to help those who need it the most.

With her mottos of “We Can Do Hard Things” and “There’s No Such Thing As Other People’s Children”, Glennon is helping to change the lives of millions of people – one word, and one dollar, at a time.
