Farahri
Toronto-based pop sensation Farahri is fast becoming one of the most sought-after performers for her catchy tunes and her upbeat stage shows.
Born in Ottawa, Farahri grew up listening to Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey – all of these musical influences of her childhood are apparent in her fresh, upbeat style.
Blending traditional Pop Music with R&B, Hip Hop, Dancehall and even Hindi Pop, Farahri has found a unique style that showcases her versatility and her powerful voice.
After debuting her first single “Dance The Night Away” in 2009, Farahri’s star has continued to rise. In 2011, her career broke wide open when her single “Shake Your Body” found its way onto the US Pop/Dance radio charts. Her quick success has come with TV appearances, awards, and the opportunity to share the stage with some of the world’s biggest musical names including Usher, Backstreet Boys, Shaggy and more.
We recently had the chance to get up close and personal with Farahri when she was in Toronto to perform at a fundraiser for Sick Kids Hospital.
Who is Farahri?
I would describe myself as an emotionally driven Pop and R&B singer/songwriter and performer. I like to write and sing about stories that deal with people’s raw emotions, taking snapshots of beautiful moments with my music.
How long has music been a part of your life?
Music has been a part of my life since I was born. My grandmother and dad used to sing in our religious community, and my dad and older sister had records, tapes and CD’s of all kinds of music, which led to my diverse musical taste.
How supportive has your family been about pursuing your dream?
Pursuing a career in music was not encouraged in my family. I had to get my degree in physiotherapy, and a job to support myself. Then I moved to Toronto on my own to give music a try. Now that I’m doing it, and my family can see how much I love it and that it’s truly what I’m meant to do, they are much more supportive.
What makes you different from other artists out there?
I want to use my platform as a pop singer to convey more than music – I want to convey a message too. I call my fans and supporters “Fireflies”, because I want to share the message that we all have the same light that shines within us. This light is the source of our power, and I want each person to shine his or her light as bright as possible, and help others shine theirs.
What keeps you inspired?
My personal motto is ‘The purpose in life is to use your talents and abilities for the betterment of humanity’. That sentence popped into my head a few years ago and whenever things get really tough I remember my ‘why’ and it keeps me going.
You are back in Toronto to help raise money for Sick Kids. Why is this cause important to you?
There is nothing that breaks my heart more than the suffering of children. I actually had an opportunity to work in a hospital once for several weeks with kids in intensive care, and I was encouraged by the programs and services in place to make sure the kids are as comfortable as they can be, and having fun whenever they can. Anything to raise money to help those programs continue is my absolute pleasure.
In talking with Farahri, we definitely saw the light of this Firefly shine through. With her infectious vibe and a focus on positive energy, we know Farahri’s path to success has only just begun.
