Summer is Bright and Sparkling with Aperol Spritz

Summer’s Sunny Cocktail

What better way to brighten up this rainy humid summer with an Aperol Spritz!  Summer 2017 has been coined the ‘Summer of Spritz’ by Vogue with Aperol Spritz being hailed as the drink of the summer.

By far the most popular aperitif in Italy, Aperol Spritz is having its moment!  The unique and refreshing flavour is made from a secret recipe of bitter and sweet oranges as well as rhubarb, many other herbs and roots.  It’s also making a big splash with celebs like Madonna and Chelsea Handler who have shared their love of the vibrant orange cocktail on Instagram. On Netflix’s ‘Master of None’ Aziz Ansari is seen making and drinking a spritz.

With all this hype I had to give it a try. I have to admit I was cautious as I’m not a big fan of sweet cocktails, preferring wine or a vodka soda but Aperol Spritz was absolutely delightful! It has a dry sweetness with a great blend of citrus and tartness from the rhubarb and herbs.  Refreshing and light it’s perfect for a summer brunch or BBQ.

ICE AND A SLICE OF ORANGE

3 PARTS OF CINZANO PROSECCO

Start by adding ice into the glass then pour in the Prosecco, the Aperol and add a splash of soda, top with a slice of orange. This serving avoids the Aperol settling at the bottom.
