Baar Baar Dekho Review
Baar Baar Dekho has two gorgeous leads, a hummable soundtrack, which includes a chartbuster in Kala Chasma and the movie is shot in beautiful foreign locations. With all those ingredients in place the question is what could possibly go wrong? Well how about an inept script and a debutant director who tries way too hard to teach the audience some important life lessons.
Baar Baar Dekho is a film that’s so bland and unoriginal that you have to ask the question, why didn’t the filmmakers go back in time and polish up the script? Baar Baar Dekho revolves around the premise what would you do if you could go back in time and do something differently after seeing how your life will pan out? Something we have already seen in the Hollywood film About Time.
Jai (Sidharth Malhotra) and Diya (Katrina Kaif) have grown up together, and been friends ever since. As time progresses Diya, a talented painter, proposes to Jai, a math professor, who is very reluctant but ends up agreeing. Not ready to get married and wanting to focus on his career on becoming a professor at Cambridge University, Jai gets into a disagreement with Diya who walks out and promises not to return. Every morning, Jai wakes up at a different point of time in his future. Outraged about what has come of his relationship with Diya, Jai must now figure out a way to go back and fix everything.
What’s wrong with Baar Baar Dekho is that the film makers underestimate the audiences intelligence as director Niyta Mehra delivers the film’s message in the most lame and unoriginal way possible. I don’t need to watch a movie to be told that a relationship with family is very important and that the only thing that matters is the present.
The main problem with Baar Baar Dekho is that the film is way too serious. However, it’s a time travel film and you can expect to get some laugh out loud moments. Don’t get me wrong I did laugh when Jai a math geek spews out such dialogues like “mathematics is my life”.
From the performances Katrina Kaif looks like a million bucks and does a fine job showing some depth and emotion. But of course Baar Baar Dekho rides on the shoulders of Sidharth Malhotra who does an admiral job portraying a warm, caring and at times self-centered Jai. Unfortunately the script let’s Malhotra down, who plays a young man that is having second thoughts on whether or not he should marry Katrina Kaif?
At 2 hours and 21 minutes Baar Baar Dekho is just way too long and really tests your patience in the second half, especially when Jai keeps traveling back and forth in time.
I’m going with two out five for Baar Baar Dekho. Question: would you like to watch the film again? Oh please, you got to be kidding me.
