“Dilwale” – Movie Review
There’s a saying that too little isn’t good for you and neither is too much. Well that’s not the case for director Rohit Shetty who decided in his latest film Dilwale to make a nice romantic film between Bollywood’s favourite 90s jodi: Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. If that’s not exciting enough, let’s also add some mind numbing action scenes. However, with all the action and romance, we need to make sure our audience gets some laughs so why not throw in some comedic relief as well. The problem is when you start cramming everything into the film, things start to derail and what’s worse is that the film drags itself out. Fortunately, Shetty has SRK and Kajol to save him as his stars don’t miss a beat.
Veer (Varun Dhawan) meets Ishita (Kriti Sanon) as the two young heartthrobs quickly fall in love and want to get married. However, there’s a problem as Raj (SRK) is holding a dark secret that he was a gangster in Bulgaria who went by the name of Kaali. And it also turns out that he has a history with Ishita’s sister Meera (Kajol) and let’s just say it isn’t good.
In Shetty’s world, bigger is better so what you get are cars being flipped like pancakes, eardrum shattering background music so you can feel the impact of every gun shot or fist thrown.
Unfortunately, things start to fall apart thanks to the unnecessary comedy tracks, as the jokes get tiring and there is no sort of pacing whatsoever as the film doesn’t know what it wants to be.
It is, however, Shetty’s cast who save the day with Varun Dhawan who shows that he can be vulnerable and comedic with so much ease. Dilwale, though undoubtedly, belongs to SRK and Kajol as they bring their inimitable selves igniting chemistry especially in the Gerua song proving that old is indeed gold.
Dilwale had the chance to be a great cinema, but in the end it turned to be just an entertaining film and that is a shame. However, still watch if you like entertainment and want to relive the nostalgia that only an SRK and Kajol duo can bring to the big screen.
