MISAFF17 Star: Parveen Kaur
Parveen Kaur is an actress, originally from British Columbia. She moved to Toronto at the age of 19 to pursue her acting career. She is best known for her work on Guillermo del Toro’s hit FX series The Strain and CTV’s Saving Hope as Dr. Asha Mirani. Parveen currently stars as Christine in ABC’s (FREEFORM) sci-fi series, Beyond.
Her upcoming work includes roles alongside Donald Sutherland (The Hunger Games) and Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men) in the upcoming thriller, American Hangman, and an indie feature alongside Grey’s Anatomy’s Giacomo Gianniotti and Adeline Kane (CW’s Reign, Teen Wolf).
Parveen is this years’ MISAFF17 Star. Here’s what she had to say when I spoke to her.
1) How did you get involved with MISAFF?
Just through the film/tv community here in Toronto. Anya and Arshad have watched me grow from early on in my career and have been immensely supportive.
2) How did you begin your journey in acting?
My journey began at a young age. I knew I wanted to be an entertainer since I was a young kid. It didn’t actually come to fruition until I moved to Toronto when I was 18 years old.
3) Being of South Asian descent, have you always had a strong support system in your choice/passion to be in the creative industry?
I would say that I never searched for a support system or understood what that was. I was a fearless young child and I knew I was going to do what I wanted and no one could get in my way. And that type of energy is magnetic and very clear to others. I think support came in the form of, stepping to the side and allowing me to be free, whether anyone liked it or not.
4) Who/what inspires you?
Inspiration can come from any place, time, person. I’m inspired by people who are focused and stand for something real. People who have great work ethic, I always wish some of that would rub off on me. Theatre inspires me a lot. Sunny summer days.
5) What are your goals for the next 3-5 years?
To continue to learn and be open.
6) What’s your F Word? (A word that describes you beginning with F)
Full. I am so full with love and gratitude.
