Why Organics Are Worthy of Celebration
Not too long ago it was difficult to find organic alternatives to common household staples. But today there are entire natural health stores dedicated to organic food and products. The growing variety and abundance of organic alternatives reflects the increased demand for responsible, sustainable agriculture. This September 17 to 25, celebrate your right to choose sustainably sourced food and products during Organic Week, co-presented by the Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA). Read on to find out everything you need to know about organics in Canada.
What does it mean to be organic? In Canada, we’re fortunate to have strict regulations in place that outline what food producers can and can’t label as organic. Buying certified products that bear the Canada Organic logo guarantees that the food you bring home to your family contains at least 95 per cent organic ingredients. These regulations also extend beyond products made here — all imported products are also held up to these standards.
Our country’s organic standards are among the most widely recognized in the world and strictly prohibit the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), toxic and persistent pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, animal cloning, and the use of drugs, antibiotics or synthetic hormones in farm animals. Organic standards also forbid the use of artificial food colours, flavours, sweeteners, preservatives, and many other processing aids and ingredients commonly found in processed foods. It’s good to know that these positive farming practices and the organic industry contribute billions to our national economy.
How do organics impact our environment? Organic producers must follow the strict standards of a harmonious, holistic production method that contributes to the biodiversity, good soil health, and ecological balance of their farms. By adhering to this production method, organic farmers are able to increase the biodiversity on and around their farms, protect the environment, and maintain long-term soil fertility. These efforts lead to an optimal balance and supply of nutrients in the crops that find their way into your home, your meals, and your kids’ lunch bags.
How can you celebrate Organic Week? From September 17 to 25, visit a local farm, farmer’s market or natural health retailer to celebrate organics with fun activities like pickling and canning workshops, farm tours, and organic food and drink tastings.
