Churchill Wild to Partner with RCGS with Arctic Discovery
Ask any adventure traveller about their dream destinations and surely Churchill, Manitoba must be somewhere at the top of their list. Home to polar bears and beluga whales, which can easily be spotted in their natural environment, coupled with the region’s spectacular aurora borealis displays, there are few places in the world that offer quite the draw as Churchill.
This year, Churchill Wild is demonstrating the rugged beauty of the area through a collaboration with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS). This Arctic safari will be led by RCGS Ambassador, renowned storm chaser and television personality George Kourounis, whose adventure TV program Angry Planet has been seen in more than 100 countries around the world.
“George exemplifies the curiosity and sense of adventure that is within all of us,” said Mike Reimer, owner of Churchill Wild. “And he’s an ideal fit to co-host one of our safaris. We strive to educate our guests about the wildlife and ecosystems around our lodges and to encourage them to develop a deep appreciation for the natural history of the wild Hudson Bay coastline. On a global scale, George does the same thing. We couldn’t be more excited about having him join us next summer.”
Churchill Wild owners/operators Mike and Jeanne Reimer are also both RCGS Ambassadors.
For Kourounis, whose resume includes documenting sand storms in Timbuktu and forest fires in Northern Ontario, his first polar bear discovery program last year was an eye-opener.
“I never even knew [Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge] existed,” said Kourounis. “I knew about Churchill being the polar bear capital of the world, but in doing the research for the show we discovered the lodge and it was a no-brainer for us. We went there and had just amazing polar bear encounters.”
Departing Aug.12-20, the customized program explores the history of Churchill and surrounding area, and also includes kayaking with beluga whales and walking with polar bears at Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge.
Churchill Wild’s polar bear safaris run from mid-July to mid-November, and feature a 100 per cent success rate, with respect to sightings at the fly-in polar bear eco-lodge located on the Hudson Bay coast, which is home to the largest and most accessible polar bear population on the planet.
