Triumphant Adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-Winning Play Arrives on Blu-ray™

Viola Davis won her first Oscar for her supporting role as a long-suffering housewife in “Fences.”

“I became an artist, and thank God I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life,” an emotional Davis said while accepting her statuette.

“Fences” is the screen version of the prize-winning August Wilson play. Davis won for her role as Rose Maxson, a self-effacing wife whose modest life implodes when her charismatic husband insists on keeping a mistress..

Denzel Washington also gave an Oscar nominated performance for best actor for portraying Troy Maxson, a former Negro League ballplayer and trash collector in the Hill District.

“Fences” is the story of the African-American experience in the 1950s, seen through the prism of a Hill District family. Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) makes his living as a sanitation worker in 1950s Pittsburgh. He once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but was deemed too old when the major leagues began admitting black athletes. Bitter over his missed opportunity, Troy creates further tension in his family when he squashes his son’s (Jovan Adepo) chance to meet a college football recruiter.

Denzel Washington also directs the powerful and moving drama that has been hailed by critics and audiences alike. Besides the nominations for Washington and Davis, FENCES has been nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay (August Wilson).

FENCES also has been named one of the best films of the year by the American Film Institute, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, the Producers Guild of America and more.  In addition, Washington and Davis both won SAG Awards for their performances and Davis’ transcendent performance earned her the 2017 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and more than a dozen critics’ group awards.
