Must-Read Books For This Holiday Season
There’s nothing more relaxing then sitting by the fireplace cuddled in a blanket and surrounded by pillows with a great book in hand. If you’re on the hunt for a new book to read, here’s our winter holiday reading list.
The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness by Andy Puddicombe
Also listed on Bill Gates’ 2018 holiday reading list, this self-help book comes from the co-founder of the meditation app, Headspace. The book offers multiple meditation techniques to impact both your physical and mental health. Takeaways? Take 10 minutes out of your day to sit in the here and now.
UNLEARN: 101 Life Lessons Without the Bullsh*t by Humble The Poet
Kanwer Singh, aka Humble the Poet, is a well known MC/Spoken Word Artist based in Toronto. Following his first novel, Unlearn: 101 Simple Truths for a Better Life, this book is all about knowing through understanding. In his own words, “Your struggles are real. If you thought reading this book will make things easier, you’ve got the wrong book. I’m not here to sell you the idea that anything can be easy, but I am here to remind you that you’re worth the difficulties that come with improving your life”.
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
After you’ve read this book, go into town and watch the movie. That’s right, this book is now a major motion picture starring Amandla Stenberg, Russell Hornsby, Regina Hall, Anthony Mackie, Issa Rae, and Common. This fictional tale centres around sixteen year old Starr Carter, who tries to find the balance with her old poor neighbourhood, and the new fancy suburban prep school she now attends. A fatal shooting involving her (unarmed) bestfriend, Khalil, and a police officer shakes up her world and Starr must decide how to react.
Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott
Read the book before it hits the theatres next March, starring Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson. For readers who absolutely adore John Green, this love story is between two teenagers who can’t get within a few feet of each other without risking their lives. Can you love someone you can never touch? Keep the tissues nearby.
Becoming by Michelle Obama
Do we need to say more? An intimate memoir written by the former First Lady of the United States inviting us all into her personal world and sharing her experiences as a mother, a wife, and as the first African American lady to serve the United States of America. If you’re looking for a tale of inspiration, we definitely recommend this one.
